This 1922 Neel Reid house on W. Wesley was built by Henry and Isabel Tompkins. It used to look like this until last week:
There was a blurb about the new color on the house in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper yesterday. Here's the quote:
Coming Sunday, Old Home's Neighbors Boo Hue
"A historic home in the tony Peachtree Heights West neighborhood has a fresh coat of paint and some freshly annoyed neighbors. The owner has saved the famous house from disrepair, but it's new color doesn't blend well with surrounding homes. "
And there is more in the Metro section today. Apparently, the neighbors aren't happy. What do you think? Leave a comment.

Money can buy many things, unfortunately good taste is not one of them. That's a real shame.
ReplyDeleteooh, ouch. We have a similar case in our neighborhood...a saturated orange more brilliant than this yellow tone. It's a traffic stopper and worth a big stare for its shock value.
ReplyDeleteI've did a post about this house. Here is a more revealing before picture. It's been for sale for a long time. I was afraid this was a white elephant with horrible interior problems. The color can be changed.
ReplyDeleteI think this is amusing but I'm not liking the blue door. This, "it's new color doesn't blend well with surrounding homes" is understatement.

Henry and Isabel Tompkins were some of my grandparents' best friends - and I remember the inside of the house from when I was a child. It is stunning inside - there are interior photographs in several of the Need Reid books out there. It wasn't in terrible shape except for the kitchen and baths which needed to be redone. It's not a big house, only 3 bedrooms, but it does have a guest house behind it. It's one of my very favorite houses in Atlanta - when it was first for sale a few years ago I tried in vain to get several friends to buy it - but it was too much work and not big enough for them with a rather outdated floor plan (very formal). I heard from the previous owner's daughter that the new owner was going to honor the historic nature of the house - maybe not...

ReplyDeleteLooks like an "island" color to me! No man is an island there, with that color. If it were me, I would paint it a lovely greige.

ReplyDeleteI drive by this house every day (I live just around the corner). The first day I saw the pain, I almost had a wreck! Maybe I am just getting used to it, but I thought to myself the other day that I hated it just a little less. It is still dreadful. Would LOVE to see the inside - I see lots of pink marble, gilt mirrors and large sculptures...
