House of the Week

This house won Stan Dixon the 2008 Shutze Award for residential/single family renovation under 4000 sq. ft.. It sits on one of my favorite streets in Atlanta and in its previous life was a one story traditional. Interestingly, one of my grandmother's best friends lived here, and then she married Henry Tompkins (who was widowed) and moved to his house at 125 W. Wesley.

You may click on all images to enlarge them. One of my favorite things about this house is the boxwood garden in the front, which you can see better in the images below if you enlarge them.

  1. Much more charming in person, close to the street, human scaled. But the shutters were closed today, giving us the cold shoulder.

  2. I love this house. I find it interesting when the shutters are closed - great that they are actually used, but it also seems to give us an indication that the owners are not home - not smart in these crime ridden times!

The roof of this house has the same mix of slate that we are using - three different colors. Stan tried to talk me into using this color for the exterior of our house, but I went one lighter - I didn't want the color to match the limestone so closely, and instead wanted subtle contrast.

    1. I realize this is an older post/comment but wondered if you would share the paint color that stan recommended as well as the one you chose. we are having quite a time choosing exterior paint for our brick ... outdoor lighting is so difficult! thanks so much! ana
