House of the Week

Southern Piedmont by Russell Versaci
This fabulous tiny house was in Southern Living last month and it caught my eye. It's a jewel box of a house and of all things, is a factory built house. Russell Versaci, architect and author of two of my favorite books (Creating a New Old House and Roots of Home), designed this house as a part of a series of houses called Pennywise (classic style at a lower cost and less build time). I love this house, because (well, it's clapboard and we all know I'm a fool for white clapboard) of the details, the scale and frankly it just seems perfect!

The second of the three Buckhead homes on tour is a majestic Greek Revival style house originally designed by Clem Ford and recently renovated and expanded by Norman Askins and Michelle Moody. Numerous authentic Greek Revival details were incorporated in the renovation, including the Greek key pattern and the anthemion (honeysuckle) motif.

The third of the homes is a French-style house designed by Summerour and Associates in 2001. It is a fine example of good site planning in a historic neighborhood as there was minimal old growth tree disturbance and minimal visual impact on surrounding homes.

Gorgeous Bathroom, Lovely House - Neisha Crosland

This weekend I was doing a little cleaning and came upon a huge stack of shelter mags from the past three years. Of course I plopped down on the floor and started looking through all of them - it was like having 30 new magazines to look at!

The image above image caught my eye and I had to search for more photos of the rest of the house - which is owned by textile and wallpaper designer Neisha Crosland.

These images were in Vogue Living Australia in 2010. Enjoy!

Alex Hitz must have the best publicist in the country! He will be a household name by the time Christmas comes!
His house is like Alex, gracious and charming with a good dose of fun. Take a peek below, and for the full spread make sure to pick up the November issue of House Beautiful. It's on news stands this week.

"Elegance is not Consumerism" - Alex Hitz

Remember when we posted about Alex Hitz's wonderful new cookbook/memoir My Beverly Hills Kitchen? Alex is here in town this week to promote the book and host several events. One of the events was a dinner/dance at the Atlanta History Center. These exquisite images feature the table setting and flowers from the dinner/dance. Jane Douglas attended the dinner/dance and said it was a perfect evening - a beautiful setting, delicious food and great company - hosted by Alex, with a presentation and signed cookbook and dancing to top off the evening. Alex told me it was the first ever dinner/dance to launch a cookbook!
I went to hear Alex speak at a book signing on Thursday night and love his sentiment that to entertain well you must love to entertain and embrace the idea of being a gracious host. It's not so much about the perfect table setting or the perfect food (although that helps, and who wouldn't love to sit at the table pictured above and eat delicious curried chicken and red pepper tart cooked by Alex). It's about loving to entertain and loving to take care of your guests. It's about cooking with the best ingredients you can afford and entertaining with the prettiest china, silver, flowers on hand. But, Alex is quick to point out that "elegance is not consumerism" - amen! You can create an elegant setting and serve comforting, yummy food without breaking the bank...but do use the best you have in your house when you entertain. If you happen to have gorgeous silver that you inherited from your grandmother that's wonderful, if not be creative and set the table with care. Your guests will notice. This quote from the book summarizes Alex's style of entertaining:
...I entertain often, and I always try to give my guests what I find they really like: comfort food - nothing pretentious, trendy, or precious. As I have found with most things in life, simple is always best.
This is a truly original cookbook, full of recipes you will want to cook for your friends and family. I will be making the caramel cake for my mother's birthday celebration next week (at least that's what she told me at dinner last night).

You can meet Alex, buy a book and get it signed on Sunday(Oct 14) at 2pm at the Buckhead Barnes and Noble: 2900 Peachtree Rd.

House of the Week

We are on a Shutze roll!!
Thanks to my good friend Laura, who sent me the link for this Philip Shutze house built in 1935. I walked through the house on a Christmas house tour a few years ago -it is lovely in scale and detail. My favorite part of the house is an octagonal room that opens to the back yard. The house is for sale - listing here.

ADAC - Behind the Windows

Stan Topol with J Nelson

Beginning this week ADAC is unveiling a new exhibit: "ADAC - Behind the Windows." This six-month installation pairs ADAC showrooms with local interior designers to create stunning displays. I stopped by on Monday and snapped some photos of the windows - make sure not to miss these beautiful windows at ADAC- it's like window shopping in New York! When you get there, go to the front desk on the third floor and you can pick up a map with the window locations and a folder with information about the exhibit. ADAC's address is 349 Peachtree Hills Avenue, NE, Atlanta 30305.
